5 days in helsinki.

helsinki old church.
Hello! It's Helsinki recap time. I don't think I mentioned this before, but my sister had a work trip scheduled in January and I decided to tag along. We left Wednesday night, arrived early afternoon on Thursday and then flew back Tuesday afternoon. Here's a breakdown of what we did:

How we got there:
We flew Iceland Air to Reykjavík, and from there we flew to Helsinki--the prices were super reasonable, and that might be due to the time of year but my round trip flight cost less than $500. Traveling there and back was a breeze--aside from being a tad disoriented from the time changes, (and much longer flights on the way home) it really wasn't too bad.

Where we stayed:
We stayed at Hotel Indigo in the design quarter, and the location was perfect. It was very walkable and there were a lot of restaurants and shops in the surrounding area. The rooms were a bit on a small side, which wasn't surprising, but we would both stay there again.

What we did:
cooling off after a sauna session at Löyly.
After attempting to sleep in on Friday, we walked down to the water to Löyly. We had sauna reservations at 1:00, and we grabbed a quick bite in their restaurant beforehand. I highly recommend making a reservation, as this spot is really popular and can get packed, but it's totally worth it. There are two saunas: a traditional sauna and a smoke sauna (which was hot) and then a couple of lounge areas with fireplaces. You can also order snacks and drinks in the lounge. The reservation is for two hours, which I thought was the perfect of time to do everything, including a couple of dips in the Baltic. It was definitely freezing, but really refreshing.

helsinki's design museum.
On Saturday, my sister was at work all day so I was left to my own devices. I walked all over the place, and ended up going to the Design Museum. They had an exhibition on "Collectors and Collections" and it was cool to see extensive collections of Moomin mugs and Karhu sneakers. The museum also featured works by other famous Finnish furniture designers and clothing by Marimekko.

On Sunday I went to the Sinebrychoff Art Museum (and didn't take any pictures). It's a house museum that showcases the 14th through 19th century art collection of Fanny and Paul Sinebrycoff, and the second floor has their furniture and is set up to reflect a glimpse into their lives as members of 19th century upper class.

festive esplanadi.

Helsinki Cathedral.
I also spent some time walking around the Esplanadi and saw the Helsinki Cathedral. It was pretty dreary and a little chilly so I kind of speed walked around town.

skywheel sisters.
On Monday we went back to the Esplanadi and rode the Skywheel. It was super touristy, but fun to see the views from the top. They also have a Veuve Clicquot bar that's adjacent to the wheel but sadly, it was closed when we went. The Skywheel also has a special Veuve gondola and sauna gondola which we did not partake in, but looked pretty cool if you're willing to shell out the $.

Where we ate/drank:

Giwa

beef dolsot bibimbap.
Giwa was so good we ate there twice (dinner on Thursday and Monday). It's a Korean restaurant that was a stone's throw from our hotel, and they had the most delicious bibimbap bowls ever.

healthy lunch at Löyly.
Before our sauna adventures at Löyly, we had a very tasty lunch at their restaurant. My sister had the chicken grain bowl (pictured above) and I had their salmon soup which set the stage for my continuing love affair with all things salmon for the rest of the trip.

Drinks at Pikkulintu.
We had drinks at Pikkulintu a couple of times during our trip. It's a whiskey and beer bar with a pretty great selection on tap, and the bartenders were really knowledgable and nice.

tasting menu.

salmon was the fish of the day.
delicious dessert.
We did a tasting menu at Gaijin and it did not disappoint. Gaijin is North Asian restaurant located by Old Church Park and we had stopped in for drinks on our first day in Helsinki. The menu looked really good, so we made reservations for Sunday figuring we'd get a bunch of small plates to share. It turns out they only do tasting menus on Sundays, which ended being perfect--each course was better than the first, and it made for a really fun night out.

drinks at liberty or death.
Liberty or Death is a speakeasy where we stopped for drinks before dinner one night. It's super small, dark, and cozy and the drinks were innovative and tasty.

coolest building for a great lunch.
I had seen the Kappeli restaurant during my walk along the Esplandi, and I dragged my sister there for lunch which ended up being a good choice. Kappeli dates back to 1867 and is a really beautiful space with gorgeous, light-filled windows. The food was also divine--we had a three-course lunch that including a sweet potato soup, salmon and a meringue dessert. I highly recommend.

We also had dinner one night at Grotesk, which, despite its name was a fun steakhouse, had burgers at Naughty Brgr and grabbed sushi for lunch at sushibar+wine. I neglected to take pictures at any of these places, but all were delicious.

And that was our trip! I'm so glad I had the chance to visit Helsinki--it was a really fun time and it's worth visiting if you have the chance.

{long} weekend in chicago.

sitting on top of the world.

On Thursday the 25th, I hopped on a plane with my mom and sister headed for Chicago. My sister had a work trip so my mom and I decided to join (my mom had never been before, and I was excited to show her my favorite places). We were a bit delayed on our flight out and by the time we got to the city we just dropped our stuff off at the James and went to Shake Shack for a late dinner (so good).

My sister was in meetings all day on Friday so my mom and I headed to the Willis Tower first thing--we still had a bit of a wait, but it was well worth it for the city views and the super scary ledge. We made our way to the Art Institute for a delish cheese and wine lunch, and meandered around the museum for a bit. When my sister wrapped up her day we went to Pops for pre-dinner drinks and truffle fries. Then we headed to Slurping Turtle for dinner--I hadn't realized that Restaurant Week coincided with our trip, but it ended up working out great: I enjoyed a four course dinner for a fraction of the usual price.

On Saturday we went to the West Loop for breakfast at Little Goat and it was amazing. It had always been on my list of places to go and I was super happy with my "Bull's Eye French Toast": eggs in a french toast hole with fried chicken and bacon maple syrup. We then walked around a bit and later had a bite to eat at Eataly and drinks at The Purple Pig.

That night we went to Boka for dinner--I was rather annoyed to be seated a 1/2 hour after our reservation time, but it ended up being one of the best meals I've ever had. We did the four course menu with wine pairings and each course ended up being more delicious than the previous--if you're in Lincoln Park I highly recommend.

And on Sunday we headed home--it was a quick but perfect trip (and we totally lucked out with the weather being in the high 30's/40s). I can't wait to go back.

TGIF & travel plans.

I'm quite excited to say that I'm going to Vienna at the end of March. My dear family friends invited me to spend the week with them and I jumped at the chance to go--I've never been there before and I'm looking forward to experiencing the Easter markets and hopefully going to the Spanish Riding School. If you have any recommendations, please let me know!

In other news, I was so exhausted this week--I know it was a short one with the Monday holiday, but it was so crazy busy and yesterday morning it felt like I had to peel my eyes open when my alarm went off (gross, but true). The weather, however, has been amazing--I had the windows of my house open yesterday and the fresh air has (somewhat) revitalized me. I know it's not going to last, but at this point, I'll take what I can get. It might have even inspired me to get a head start on some spring cleaning this weekend...or maybe I'll just catch up on sleep. We shall see.

Have a great weekend.

sister weekend in chicago.

cloudy day, windy city.
jackie at the art institute.

too many palomas.

short rib hash at sable.

eataly souvenir.

Last Thursday my sister and I headed to the Windy City--she had some things to do for work, so I decided to tag along and make a long weekend out of it. We used to go to Chicago annually but we haven't been since 2014--it was a long overdue sister trip.

When we landed Thursday night we checked into The James (a favorite hotel in a great location) and walked over to the Slurping Turtle for ramen. Every time we visit we always squeeze in a meal there, and it never disappoints (especially during cold weather).

On Friday my sister had to work all day so when I finally pulled myself together I went to the Art Institute. It was my first time there and they had so many amazing pieces, from Miró to Pollock--I especially loved seeing A Sunday on La Grande Jatte and channeling my inner Cameron Frye. After a few hours walking around I stopped at Remington's for a burger and read Pretty Girls (which is such a good thriller). When my sister was done we had a drink at the hotel bar, then headed out for dinner at GT Fish & Oyster and it was absolutely delicious--super fresh and good for sharing.

After my sister's meeting on Saturday morning, we went to Sable for brunch--they had a different chef from the previous times we ate there (no more Heather Terhune from Top Chef), but it was still very good (although I missed the small plates). We then trekked over to the Willis Tower to visit the Skydeck but by the time we got there the wait was over 45 minutes and I didn't feel up to it. We headed back towards the hotel and went to Eataly--this was my first time there and it totally lived up to the hype. We had wine and cheese at one of the restaurant bars and then did a little shopping--I'll definitely need to visit the one in Boston but I'm glad I don't live too close because it could be dangerous. I would be there every day. Saturday night we went to the original Morton's for steaks and chocolate mousse and then called it a night because our flight on Sunday was pretty early (and I was honestly so tired from all of the walking).

It was the perfect short getaway--I seriously love Chicago and I love sharing it with my sister...we're already planning the next trip.

Now comes the battle of working my first full week in 2017. Womp womp.

5.03.2016

I fell in love...

...with Monterrey, Mexico.

View of the city of Monterrey from Chipinque Ecological Park.

Cathedral at sunset in Santiago.

Former jumping field/current garden.
Ivy-covered hay barn.

Authentic breakfast of concha (Mexican sweet bread) y café.

Post riding lesson (so hot and sore).

Some souvenirs that I can't wait to break out once the temperature warms.
I just got back from a quick 3-day jaunt to Monterrey to visit my aunt, and I can honestly say I have never had a place affect me the way that it did. I was completely unprepared to fall in love with the city, and that's exactly what happened. All of the people I met were incredibly nice, the views of the Sierra Madre are insane, I was surrounded by horses (my aunt is a trainer) and the food was delicious.

It was so great to spend one-on-one time with my aunt: I usually get to see her once or twice a year (despite being a major city, there are no direct flights from Boston to Monterrey and takes a full day of travel to get there from New England), and it was such a treat to talk and catch up with her. Her house is incredible (high ceilings, tile floors, gorgeous gardens and the cutest dogs) and she's a truly generous and supportive person.

I came back Sunday physically tired but mentally refreshed and recharged to make some changes and try new things. And true confessions: there's a huge part of me that wants to pack my bags and Olive and head back down on a more permanent basis. I love High Street House and being so close to my family in MA, but despite the quick trip, I also felt at home in Monterrey. It's definitely something to think about.

3.13.2015

bahamas or bust.

Oh man, this week was a doozy to say the least. The light at the end of the tunnel is that I'm off to the Bahamas with MET and his family for a glorious week of sun, sand, trashy books, cocktails and sleep. This trip could not have come at a better time, and I'm hoping I'll return to a snow-free front yard (sunkissed and refreshed, obviously).

Follow along on instagram (@heatherandolive), and happy weekend!

I'm off on a quick work trip to Chicago. I'm exhausted already.

Making a living is tough.

chicago recap part II.

This trip was 99% about food. My sister and I love to eat, and Chicago has such a plethora of fabulous restaurants--we were in heaven. When we arrived Friday morning, we checked into our hotel and promptly made our way to the Slurping Turtle. [Well, we went there after we stopped at Firecakes for donuts, because...donuts]. The restaurant is owned by Takashi Yagihashi of Top Chef Masters fame, and its executive chef, Aaron Cuschieri was on Top Chef New Orleans this past season. (Aaron was actually there when we ate lunch, which was rather fun.) It was restaurant week, so we were each able to get an appetizer, bowl of ramen, and dessert for $22--it was an insane amount of food. Later that night, we were still stuffed from lunch so we went to the quiet bar at Keefer's for martinis and salads (and a complimentary pesto pizza that I promptly inhaled).

L-R: Slurping Turtle /  duck fat fried chicken / ramen / drinks and pizza at Keefer's
Saturday began with brunch at Sable, and our love affair with this restaurant/bar continued throughout the weekend. We had visited for drinks last year, and decided to try it out for brunch since it was attached to the hotel. And it was so friggin good. The executive chef, Heather Terhune was on Top Chef Texas. (Are you sensing a theme here?) After eating brunch Sunday, we promptly made another reservation for Sunday.

L-R: the bar where we made friends and ate beef jerky /  a craft cocktail of vodka, St. Germain, and other secretive goodness / ginger-scallion brown fried rice and eggs / chicken and waffles that I inhaled both Saturday and Sunday / pork belly / steak and eggs
I really cannot sing the praises of Sable enough--I highly recommend if you're ever in the River North area, either for some chicken and waffles or a delicious beverage (their cocktail menu is like a novel).

Saturday night was the main event: we put on our fancy clothes for a 10-course tasting with drink pairings at iNG. iNG stands for "Imagining New Gastronomy", and their menu changes every 6-12 weeks to correlate to a new theme. Through March 1st, the menu is "Salvador Dali" and each course represents one of Dali's works, which was very cool. They even had edible melting clocks.

Another cool aspect of iNG was their use of the "Miracle Berry": twice during our tasting, our server presented us with the course and a small plate with two pills and two wedges of lemon. We were instructed to try everything on our plate, and then eat the pill and wait 30 seconds. The berry binds to your sour and bitter taste receptors and makes everything taste sweet--hence the lemon. After waiting the 30 seconds, you take a bite of the lemon and it tastes sugary sweet so you know the berry has taken effect. Then, you try your course and see how the flavors changed. It was so different, but so fun--and you could purchase the berry pills on your way out if you wanted to flavor trip at home, which my sister (obviously) did.

L-R: me / my sister / the miracle berry / our cocktail served in a beaker

Every tasting I've ever done has been very traditional, so it was really great to do something different at iNG--I'm so glad we decided to go there instead of the more mainstream route. Their presentations were incredible, but it was a true "tasting"--the portions weren't totally out of control, and I didn't feel like I needed to be rolled out of there. The only time I felt like it might be too much was when we had a course with oxtail served in a bone with marrow--it was delicious, but a little heavy and slightly weird. Luckily we switched to a lighter dessert right after that so a potential crisis averted. And they were great with tailoring each course to meet my sister's GF needs.

And that was our trip--nothing too crazy and exactly what we wanted. I'm glad my sister and I are on the same page when it comes to travel priorities. We're a good team.

2.04.2014

chicago recap part I.

My sister and I left for our Chicago trip early Friday morning from Boston. We stayed at Hotel Palomar (thanks to Jetsetter, it was $255 for two nights with two queen beds). I highly recommend.

It wasn't as cold as I was expecting, but Saturday we were met with a bit of a snowstorm. After walking to Millennium Park in slush, we did a little day drinking at Sable in our hats (to let people know we meant business).

Stay tuned tomorrow for the best part: the FOOD.

I'm still recovering from an epic sister weekend in Chicago. Stay tuned for recaps this week!

sister trip.

{ via }
Finally. My sister and I take off for our annual Chicago sister trip tomorrow. While I'm not super pumped about the temps we'll be facing (hello, wind chill), we have such fun eating and drinking adventures planned, including a 10-course tasting dinner. I'll be back next week 5 pounds heavier with recaps.

12.18.2013

booked.

{ via }
I'm so pumped: my sister and I booked a trip to Chicago for the end of January. (Who goes to Chicago in January? Hardy New Englanders, that's who). We did this trip last year around this time when I was contemplating a move, and it turned into an incredible eating and drinking extravaganza.

We already have plans to revisit some of our favorites, but do you have any Chicago restaurants that are a must-see?

I'm all ears!
